The Resale Value of Quality Kids’ Bikes

You get what you pay for.  This statement holds true for kid’s bikes and equipment.  I’m a thrifty guy but I overcome any impulse to cheap out when it comes to kids’ bike gear.  From experience, the cheap knee pads, gloves or 12 inch pedal bike from a big box store always find their way into the bin rather than being handed down to kiddo 2 or on Facebook Marketplace.

As a general rule, I stay away from anything sold at a toy store or big boxed store.  More value and enjoyment can be found in quality products.  Our goal is to point you in the right direction so your kids have the most fun possible on two wheels (stay tuned for more blog posts). At first glance, the price of a quality kids’ bike might seem outrageous for only getting one or two seasons on it before your child outgrows it.  However, the resale value of the right bike might surprise you. And with the the last two years of Covid supply chain problems, increased demand and rising prices for outdoor goods, its never been easier to sell a kids bike at 80-90% of MSRP   Here are a couple of examples of my recent bike purchases and flips:

  1. Spawn Furi 14” pedal bike ,purchased retail $375, sold on craigslist in 1 day for $310 (1 year of use)
  2. Redline Proline micro mini BMX race, purchased used $150, sold $180 (1 year of use)
  3. Strider original balance bike, purchased retail for $110, sold $50 (4 years of use, two kids)

Now, $375 for a child's first pedal bike is steep but I think back to letting go of the back seat and seeing my 3 year old pedal away first attempt. A year of fun later and a $65 loss seems negligible, in fact it sounds like a bargain. Jack and myself are firm believers in buying products that best serve their intended use and hold value because they are in demand. Any recommendations on best way to find a used Woom 5? I’m on the notification list for new ones, but we thought we’d look for a used one for my son in the meantime. Thanks!

Probably Craigslist would be best bet…tough times for used bikes like new.

Woom 5 is currently on ebay, but if you’re on the market for woom 5 OFF just stick with waiting list – used once are selling for twice what the new once are (if you can find it)

I have a 16″ Spawn bike I will be selling soon and I’m located in Richmond VA. Besides craigslist and Facebook are there any other places you would recommend I list it to reach the best potential buyers?
    Thanks

It will go in hours on craigslist. Pinkbike is also good.

Depends on condition and where you are. These days, bikes are in high demand. I would start at 70-80% retail if in excellent condition.
