First Look: The Woom 1

We are a big fan of balance bikes.  We are also fans of quality made bikes that are well designed and well thought out.  At first glance, the Woom 1 looks different.  It’s low step through and bright coloured frame definatley catches your attention.  When you look closer you start to see all the details of this little machine.  From one feature to the next, the bike seems to be pushing balance bikes to a new standard: Alloy frame/stem/rims, sealed bearings, steering limiter, kid friendly lever v brake, small diameter bar/grips, padded seat, and a quick release seat post- all in a 7.7 lb package for $199.

The Woom 1 for the 2 year old

We have had the Woom 1 for about a month now.  Both my 2 and 5 year old have been running it up and down our street and in our local bike park.  At first, my just 2 year old was hesitant to give up his strider but now the Woom 1 has taken his interest and has become his “go to” bike.  I think it may be the extra pound in weight that first made him hesitate but the stability of the bike has raised his skills and confidence to a level beyond that of his older brother when he himself was 2 years old (see video below).

My oldest, just turned five, has also given the Woom 1 a go.  From age two to three I literally could not pull him of his Like a Bike Jumper.  He still hops on the Jumper once in a while just because balance bikes are so darn fun.  Where he saw the Woom 1 shine was in how fast he could get the bike going .  With no suspension to dampen his push, like that of the jumper, he was absolutely flying down the side-walk.  A little too fast in fact as he dumped trying to make a turn at the bottom of a hill and tore the cute little bell off the bike.  “Woa Dad, this thing is fast!” was his response.  His little brother was not so pleased as he liked that bell…

Once the weather picks up, we plan to put this bike through the wringer and report back with a full video review. You can see more details of the Woom 1 here.
