BMX Season is here…Sign up the kids now
Spring is here and it’s time to think about outdoor activities for the kids. If you are cyclists you have probably thought about introducing your kids to BMX racing. Even if you are not a biker yourself perhaps flash backs of the 80’s movie RAD has been haunting your dreams. Well stop procrastinating and head to the BMX track on a race evening or day this Spring. While not a BMX dance off or Hell Track, you can live vicariously through your kids pumping whoops and railing berms.
What you need to know as a first timer
BMX is a grass roots sport run by volunteers. While most tracks have Facebook pages and websites, it’s best to head down to the track on practice or race days and start talking to other parents. Most tracks have loner bikes and helmets and have one off licence/race fees ?(around $5-$10). With almost no cost to try, what’s holding you back?
What Gear is needed?
We covered the balance bike racers in another post so I will only say the little ones love the racing and environment. For all other classes the following gear is required:
- Full Face Helmet
- Closed Toe Shoes
- Long Sleeve T Shirt
- Long Pants
- Gloves (not required but good idea)
- Shin/Knee pads (not required but good idea)
OK they are hooked- now what?
BMX Race bikes are specific tools for the track so there is an initial investment in the bike and gear. With a little research, asking questions of other track families and some time on Craigslist this does not have to be an expensive endeavour. I would argue all in BMX racing costs less than most “non school supported” sports. Below is a rough idea of Race Bike sizing- again your local track is the best place to find people to help with fit and used bikes.
Along with a bike and gear, annual licencing from the governing body ($50-$65) and individual race fees ($5-$10) make up the other costs with Racing. North American governing bodies are USA BMX/BMX Canada and Cycling Canada. Now get the kids out at an early age, the bike skills and development are amazing- unmatched by any other cycling discipline. There is no commitment to attend practice or race days so its a great flexible family sport. See you on the Track!
